Morocco has officially re-opened to British travellers, lifting its ban on flights to/from the UK that had been in place since late October. This incredibly welcome news once again opens up a destination that offers an impressive range of trekking alongside enthralling cities and ancient cultural attractions. Adventure holiday experts, Mountain Kingdoms, explore the best of Morocco on their six small group trekking holidays that include treks along the coast, through the Sahara Desert and high into the Atlas Mountains. They can also arrange Tailor Made holidays from M’goun to Marrakesh.

Less than four hours flight from London, Morocco is a startlingly different country. From the haunting call to prayer, to the sensory overload of the souks, and to the surreal Mars-like desert landscapes, it seems a world away from home. Yet, now that it has opened its borders again to UK travellers, Morocco is an easily accessible country with good transport links and first rate accommodation, it also has a wide range of established and off-the-beaten-track trekking trails as well as highly experienced trek leaders and support teams.

Adventure holiday experts, Mountain Kingdoms, have been running treks to Morocco for many years and now offers six small group treks that cover Morocco’s diverse landscapes and cultural attractions. All treks are led by an expert local guide and come with full-service camping and baggage porterage. There is time in Marrakesh, staying in a characterful riad in the heart of the city, plus visits to key cultural sights and local interaction wherever possible. With airport transfers included, and travel by private vehicle, they offer excellent value.

Here are a selection of Mountain Kingdoms’ Morocco holidays; full details of all trips can be found at https://www.mountainkingdoms.com/destinations/morocco/holidays/all.

This is properly adventurous trekking with plenty of river wading, but also offering a chance to explore Berber villages and see the sights of Ouarzazate, Kasbah Amherdhil, Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, and Marrakesh.

Morocco Coastal Trek & Essaouira

This easy-paced trek starts at Sidi Kakoui – the former hippy hangout of Jimi Hendrix and the Stones – before heading south for five days along the wide deserted sand beaches of Morocco’s Atlantic coast. By day there may be encounters with fishermen, goat herders and Berber villagers, whilst at night there’s camping by the ocean lulled by the sound of the waves. Trek complete, it’s off to nearby Essaouira for some R&R including an invigorating hammam, an atmospheric riad and some on foot exploration.

Sahara Camel Trek, Morocco

Spend five-nights under canvas on this dune trek from Mhamid, passing through palm groves, tamarisk oases, the big dunes of Erg Zaher, Wadi Draa and the Erg Smar dunes. The trekking is through varied desert terrain for around 5-6 hours each day, and supported by a camel team. Evenings are spent around the camp fire watching the stars. After the trek the return to Marrakesh is via the saffron fields of Talouine with a stay in the wonderful Pais Riad Hida at Ouled Berhil, and then up and over the dizzy Tizi n’Test pass.

A carefully planned route, with excellent acclimatisation, climbs steadily through the Toubkal Massif, crossing high passes, camping in picturesque pastures and enjoying the warm hospitality of the villagers en route. Finally, it reaches the summit of Toubkal which rewards with views over the Atlas Mountains and to the Sahara Desert beyond.

Mountain Kingdoms also offers a classic ascent of Mount Toubkal.
