Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay famously stepped foot on the summit of Everest on the 29th May 1953 receiving worldwide acclaim and a lifetime of mountaineering superstardom. To mark their historic achievement, Mountain Kingdoms has arranged a special Everest Base Camp Trek to arrive at Base Camp exactly 70 years later.

This platinum anniversary trek will be led by Pertemba Sherpa – a celebrated three times Everest summiteer who made his first ascent alongside mountaineering legend Chris Bonington. Pertemba’s exceptional experience, Himalayan knowledge and years spent accumulating a treasure trove of mountaineering tales will add an extra dimension to the trek and give a unique insight into life on Everest.

During the day at base camp there will be the chance to meet any expedition members who are still in situ as the climbing season draws to a close, and perhaps hear enthralling stories of their adventures over a mug of chai. As base camp is also the starting point for the Everest Marathon, held on the same momentous day, there should be a real buzz of excitement and activity.

Scenically spectacularly at every step, the ascent to base camp from Lukla is steady and gradual with side treks to picturesque villages and two acclimatisation days to aid adjustment to the thinner mountain air. By staying in traditional tea houses en route hearty meals and a warm welcome are assured, plus trekkers will also be giving back to the local Sherpa communities of the Khumbu.

The trek to Everest Base Camp is a very special achievement in its own right, but with the added bonus of the anniversary celebrations, this will be a genuine once-in-a-lifetime experience.
